How My Art Helped With My Recent Struggle
Posted by Jon Chase on
Have you ever struggled with your mental health, and it was so bad you were overwhelmed? I did recently, and this artwork helped get me thru it.
Mid-April, I couldn't get up out of bed. I needed to get the kids ready for school, and I couldn't do it. With little energy, I dragged myself out of bed and got the kids to school. I was a wreck. My feelings of self-doubt, hopelessness, and fear were at a dangerous level. Terrible thoughts crept back into my mind. Do I need even to be here any longer?
My whole purpose for re-launching DSTROYR was to help raise awareness for children's mental health. Here I am having a complete meltdown. I reached out and got professional help. At the same time, I waited for my call back for a therapy session. I did a rapid sketch of this piece of artwork.
This artwork, called Ray Of Light, is how I worked out my struggle. I am walking thru the clouds and rain of my battle. The feelings and emotions I had are under a cracking walkway. I was looking for a glimpse of hope in all of this. That hope ended up being this artwork.
I did not complete this in a day; it took me weeks. As I felt better, I would work on it at night after my client's work was done. This artwork was private and something I did just for myself. But as I got close to completing it, I felt the need to share it, which I did during one of my IG Live sessions.
This artwork has helped me, and I hope it can help others.
